Turbo Add on

Diesel Turbo – Add-ons

Adding a turbo to an existing diesel engine will not make a dramatic difference unless the fuel system is designed for a turbo unit. Manufactures add a boost compensator as part of the diesel injection pump system to compensate for the turbo boost at higher engine rpms. Merely adding a turbo unit to an existing diesel engine and adjusting the diesel fuel governor will result in a mixture of fuel that is rich at idle or too lean at full boost.

Typical Diesel Fuel System
The fuel injection pump is the heart of the diesel fuel injection system. It is a highly precise, mechanized devise that places fuel under high pressure – meters it accurately – delivers it in proper sequence to the diesel injection nozzles, and injects it into the cylinders in the form of a very fine spray with precise timing.

In order to meet the engine builder’s reliability and performance specification, the diesel fuel injection pump is subjected to stringent quality inspections and test and precise settings and adjustments. It is quite possible to manipulate the latter on an engine to obtain increased power. However, it should be clearly understood that such tampering is done at the owner’s risk, and often with disastrous consequences to his equipment.
